TECHNIQUE

My art has been defined by Steve McKibben of McKibben Fine Art Studios in Laguna Beach, CA as "Contemporary Expressionism". He goes on to say "Johnson’s Original compositions are Mixed Media on Canvas utilizing various Inks & Metallic’s in an abstract free flow of color values and harmony creating a balance with nature & fantasy."

I love to spend hours and days with my art and do much of the creating "in the moment". The fine line detail is all free hand drawing with design elements and interacting lines. All working together to create a movement, a flow.

The art technique is a mixed media of layered materials using images, textures, metallic and non-metallic inks. The free hand design of the inks is very detailed and spontaneous. Each piece is finished with textures mirroring the hand drawn designs. The canvases are very dimensional, with color variations and tactile qualities. Various looks occur with different lighting environments. This technique has been called "unique and a style never before seen".

The base colors are a metallic ink wash overlayed onto the canvas surface defining the general composition. Detailed lines and designs are then free-hand drawn "in the moment" with fine line metallic pens but without predetermined thought. The final texture layer is created with a clear gel base and applied with a small tube to emphasize each line of the metallic pen design. Final gels with metaliic inks mixed in as well as UV coating is applied to seal the art so that one can enjoy touching the surface design.
